These tapes were recorded over at least 5 years. I don’t record much at all but when I do it’s usually from my modular synth straight into a 4-track. The part I like most about synths isn’t necessarily the music but the process of building or modding. Reading about the circuits and what strangers have gleaned online is more than interesting, and then incorporating that (or “synthesizing” it, haha) into a larger system is really fun and rewarding for me. There’s really no end to the lessons learned.

All that is a solo activity in general (aside from what people share online, but I would hardly call that social) so it’s great to meet up with friends irl–of any and all levels of familiarity with electronics–and share what we can. Repairing electronics is another great way to come together. And to make tapes and share those is another.

Anyway, it’s spelled out pretty well in the liner notes: All sounds here were created and recorded using electronics that were either built, modified, or repaired by yours truly. This album wouldn’t exist without the consistent encouragement of my friends to record. Thanks for listening!

Sometimes working with electronics is therapeutic and refreshing, and sometimes it’s a distraction or a hiding place. But it always involves relationship somehow, and exploration, and I love that.
